How to Care for Dentures

If you’ve lost many teeth or even all your teeth, dentures can be a great tooth replacement. We offer partial and full dentures at Donald Kim, DDS, Family & Cosmetic Dentistry. Wondering how to take care of dentures? Here’s what to know about their proper care and cleaning:

Clean your dentures at least twice a day

Brush your dentures at least twice a day. First, remove your dentures. Place a hand towel or wash cloth at the bottom of your sink as a cushion. Using lukewarm water, a soft-bristled toothbrush, and denture cleanser, brush to remove bits of food and plaque. Don’t use hot water! The heat can warp your dentures.

Soak your dentures overnight

You should not wear your dentures while you sleep. However, they need to stay moist or they will become dry and brittle. Dentures should be soaked in water or a denture-soaking solution overnight.

Rinse dentures after eating & soaking

While you only need to give your dentures a thorough cleaning twice a day, it’s a good idea to rinse them after eating. This prevents the buildup of food debris and bacteria. Carefully remove your dentures and rinse them under lukewarm water. You should also rinse your dentures after soaking them so you aren’t accidentally ingesting any cleaning solution or dislodged debris.

Keep your mouth clean

Even if you have no teeth left, you want to keep your mouth clean. With a very soft toothbrush and warm water, clean your gums, tongue, cheeks, and the roof of your mouth. If you do have teeth left, brush and floss them at least twice a day.
