When should I visit an emergency dentist?

Any dental-related issue that involves severe pain, bleeding, swelling, or damage is likely a dental emergency. If you are on the fence, feel free to give our office a call so our experienced team can advise. If you have a broken jaw or any serious medical injuries that require immediate attention, we recommend visiting an emergency room first before making an appointment with our office. We may also determine that your situation doesn’t require a same-day visit, and we can make a convenient appointment for you in the near future.

What should I do if I knock out a tooth?

A knocked-out adult tooth must be fixed as quickly as possible before the tooth dies and cannot be reattached. Locate the tooth and carefully pick it up by the crown, not the root, and clean it off if possible. Then, gently reinsert the tooth back in the socket and bite down on a piece of clean cloth or gauze to hold it in place. If it’s too painful or not possible to reinsert the tooth, place it in a cup of milk or saliva before heading straight to our office. Once you arrive, our team will do everything we can to save the tooth and manage any pain you’re experiencing.

How do I avoid dental emergencies?

Some dental emergencies are truly unavoidable, like if an accident occurs and a tooth is damaged or knocked out. However, there are things you can do to reduce your odds of needing urgent dental care. If you regularly play aggressive contact sports like football or soccer, for example, wearing a custom athletic mouthguard can protect your teeth from any potential damage. Practicing good oral hygiene at home and scheduling regular dental visits is also essential for maintaining positive oral health and preventing minor issues from advancing into dental emergencies.
