Emergency Dental Care: What to Do When You Can’t Wait
At Donald Kim, DDS, Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we understand that dental emergencies can happen at any time. Sometimes, it’s hard to decide whether you can wait or not. In this blog, we offer essential guidance on navigating urgent dental issues, especially when you say you can’t wait.
Severe Toothache
If you experience a sudden, severe toothache, rinse your mouth with warm water and floss gently to remove any debris. If the pain persists, contact our office immediately. Avoid using aspirin directly on the gums, as it can cause irritation.
Knocked-Out Tooth
In the case of a knocked-out tooth, handle it by the crown (top) and avoid touching the root. Rinse it gently with water if dirty and try to reinsert it into the socket. If that’s not possible, place the tooth in a container of milk or saliva and seek immediate dental attention.
Broken or Chipped Tooth
Save any broken pieces and rinse your mouth with warm water. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and contact us right away. The sooner we address the issue, the better the chances of restoring your tooth.
Lost Filling or Crown
A lost filling or crown can expose sensitive tooth tissue. Apply dental cement or sugar-free gum to cover the area temporarily and prevent sensitivity. Contact our office promptly for a professional evaluation and restoration.
Infections or Abscesses
Swelling, pain, and fever may indicate a dental infection. Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater and take over-the-counter pain relievers. Seek emergency dental care to address the infection and prevent it from spreading.
